LOMOX - Eco-friendly light emitting wallpaper |
|
Lomox, a Welsh company, has developed light-emitting wallpaper that uses OLED (organic light emitting diodes) that can be printed on any flat surface and produce light. A low electric current (3 to 5 volts) is used to stimulate the chemicals found in the coating and help it to generate light.
Because the light-emitting wallpaper requires such low voltage to operate, it can be used in many different applications and due to its organic properties, it is actually a fairly eco-conscious and efficient development, though it is fairly costly to produce and won’t be available to consumers until 2012.
Mark Williamson, Director of Innovations at the Carbon Trust, said: “Lighting is a major producer of carbon emissions. This technology has the potential to produce ultra efficient lighting for a wide range of applications, tapping into a huge global market. It’s a great example of the kind of innovation that makes the UK a hotbed of clean technology development. We’re now on the look-out for other technologies that can save carbon and be a commercial success.”
The replacement of existing light sources with OLEDs will reduce energy consumption substantially (by 60%) causing a major reduction of CO2 and positively impacting the greenhouse effect significantly.
Compared to LEDs and fluorescent lighting, OLEDS: Generate more pleasing white light and better colour rendition Enable “design colour” on demand Provide new design opportunities for architects
